An Audiologist is a state licensed practitioner, researcher, or educator holding a Master’s or Doctoral degree in the field of hearing science and hearing disorders.
Audiologists are trained to evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders in newborns, children, and adults.
Audiologists work with newborns, children, adults, and the aging to test and assess one’s hearing loss.They are able to prescribe and fit hearing aids, work with cochlear implants, perform ear or hearing related surgical monitoring, work with companies and employees on hearing conservation programs, screen newborns for hearing loss, or assess someone for dizziness issues. Audiologists also can provide auditory training, speech reading, or assist to provide other communication strategies. Many audiologists specialize in one area or age group.
Audiologists may work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, private practices, Ear, Nose, and Throat offices, universities, schools or for the government, military of VA hospitals.
The Maine Academy of Audiology is a non-profit organization established in 1997 by Maine Audiologists. We practice in a wide variety of settings including private practices, hospitals, speech & hearing centers, schools, universities, and in association with physicians who specialize in the treatment of ears.
